NSW Apprentice & Trainee Training Information

Barber Temple is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) delivering nationally recognised qualifications in hairdressing and barbering. The information below is designed to support new apprentices, trainees, and employers undertaking training in New South Wales under the Smart and Skilled program.

ENROLMENT

Government funding is available for the formal training component of apprenticeships and most traineeships. In some cases, employers are responsible for paying training feesβ€”this will depend on the relevant industrial award.

Under Smart and Skilled:

  • All apprenticeship qualifications are subsidised.
  • Some apprenticeship qualifications may be fee-free (subject to eligibility).
  • Most new entrant traineeships are subsidised.
  • NSW new entrant trainees who commence training on or after 1 January 2020 may be eligible for fee-free training.

Notification of Enrolment (Smart and Skilled)

As a Smart and Skilled provider, Barber Temple must complete enrolment notifications through the NSW Department portal in line with Smart and Skilled requirements.

Student Consent

Before enrolment can proceed, Barber Temple must obtain consent for the Department’s use of student information. Consent may be provided by:

  • Signing or electronically accepting a consent form (including via a tick box), or
  • Providing verbal consent after a consent statement is read or made available.

Consent is provided during online enrolment through the Barber Temple website via the Terms and Conditions of Enrolment.

Enrolment Requirements

At enrolment, students must:

  • Complete Smart and Skilled information
  • Provide proof of eligibility (if applicable)
  • Sign the enrolment declaration confirming:All eligibility evidence supplied is correctConsent has been provided for enrolment notification

If consent is not provided, Barber Temple cannot proceed with enrolment.

Once consent is confirmed, a Commitment ID is generated and training may commence.

Unique Student Identifier

All students undertaking nationally recognised training must have a Unique Student Identifier (USI).

A USI is a 10-character reference number that:

  • Records all nationally recognised training completed since 1 January 2015
  • Allows access to an online training transcript
  • Is required to receive a qualification or Statement of Attainment

Without a USI, qualifications cannot be issued.

Accessing Your Transcript

Students can access their training transcript online at any time.

To allow Barber Temple (RTO 41497) to view your transcript:

  1. Log into your USI account
  2. Select Manage Permissions
  3. Add Barber Temple using the details above

Roles and Responsibilities

Employer or Host Employer

Your apprenticeship begins with your employer, who:

  • Recruits the apprentice or trainee
  • Engages an Apprenticeship Network Provider (ANP) to establish the Training Contract
  • Provides a safe workplace and quality on-the-job training

In some cases, your legal employer may be a Group Training Organisation (GTO), who employs you and places you with a host employer.

Employers are responsible for:

  • Supervising workplace training
  • Paying wages and entitlements
  • Providing a safe working environment
  • Allowing time off work to attend training with the RTO

Apprenticeship Network Provider (ANP)

ANPs support both employers and apprentices by:

  • Preparing the National Training Contract
  • Explaining rights and responsibilities
  • Monitoring training progress
  • Advising on incentives and subsidies
  • Connecting apprentices with support services

The employer contacts the ANP to commence the apprenticeship.

Apprentice or Trainee

By signing your National Training Contract, you agree to:

  • Participate in workplace training
  • Undertake formal training with Barber Temple
  • Complete assessments and required learning activities
  • Work toward achieving your nationally recognised qualification

Workplace Supervisor

Your supervisor or employer acts as your workplace coach and will:

  • Teach job-specific skills
  • Ensure safe work practices
  • Provide feedback and guidance
  • Record workplace training
  • Supply assessment evidence to Barber Temple

Registered Training Organisation (RTO)

Barber Temple develops and delivers your training in partnership with you and your employer.

We:

  • Create and manage your training plan
  • Deliver formal training
  • Monitor progress and assess competence
  • Provide ongoing support throughout the apprenticeship
  • Issue qualifications upon successful completion

Barber Temple also provides support with:

  • Training plans and training records
  • Delivery and assessment queries
  • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
  • Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) support
  • Completion and progression advice

Support Services

Support services may include:

  • Advice on wages, conditions, and workplace safety
  • Mentoring and retention support
  • Personal counselling for financial or personal challenges

Apprentice Information

An apprenticeship combines paid employment with structured training toward a nationally recognised qualification.

Apprentices work toward:

  • Certificate III in Barbering

Training duration is generally 3–6 years, depending on employment conditions.

Barber Temple supports apprentices by:

  • Assigning a dedicated Educator
  • Monitoring individual progress
  • Keeping employers informed
  • Recommending relevant boot camps and workshops

Barber Temple delivers flexible, industry-focused training tailored to the needs of apprentices and salons.

Our training model includes:

  • Workplace-based training and/or Academy delivery
  • Practical, hands-on education
  • Fully subsidised workshops aligned to qualification requirements
  • Industry-current educators with strong employer engagement

Training Services NSW manages apprenticeships and traineeships across New South Wales.

They:

  • Approve apprenticeship applications
  • Ensure compliance by all parties
  • Provide dispute resolution and support services
  • Approve completion and issue Certificates of Proficiency
