Dual-speed motors are becoming increasingly common in barber clippers, with recent releases from Wahl, BaBylissPRO, JRL and Pro-One giving barbers the ability to switch between two motor speeds.
The technology itself isn't new. JRL helped bring dual-speed motors into mainstream barbering with the 2020C series, which featured selectable motor speeds. What's changed is the number of brands now adopting the technology and how they're using it.
What does a dual-speed clipper do?
A dual-speed clipper lets you switch between two motor speeds, giving you more control over how the clipper runs for different parts of a haircut.
Higher speeds increase the number of blade movements per minute, which can be useful for fading and detailed work through shorter hair. Lower speeds provide a more controlled feel that can suit general cutting and bulk removal.
The advantage isn't necessarily having more power. It's being able to choose how you want the clipper to run.
Is higher RPM better for a clipper?
Not necessarily.
RPM tells you how quickly the motor is operating, but it doesn't tell you everything about how a clipper will cut.
Torque, blade design and how well the motor maintains its speed under load all play a part. A 9,000 RPM clipper isn't automatically better than one running at 7,500 RPM.
That's part of the appeal of dual-speed technology. You don't have to run your clipper at maximum speed simply because it's available.

JRL Onyx
The JRL Onyx is a dual-speed clipper with selectable 6,000 and 7,500 RPM settings, continuing the approach JRL introduced with the earlier 2020C series.

Do you need a dual-speed clipper?
Not every barber needs two motor speeds, and having the feature doesn't mean you need to constantly switch between them.
